Millwrights Class Descriptions
Advanced Optical Level
This
course utilizes additional hands-on training to develop skills in machine setup
and adjustments.
Advanced Welding
This
course will introduce boiler tube procedures to members with welding
experience. Welders will be taught the skills necessary to take and pass the
certification test.
Aerial Lift
Following ANSI standards, this class utilizes
classroom and hands-on instruction. Members will be provided with the skills
necessary to safely operate “Self-Propelled Platforms” (Scissor Lifts) and
“Boom-Supported Platforms” (Boom Lifts).
Basic Shaft Alignment
This course provides an in-depth review of shaft alignment, using
dial indicator and feeler gauges. Classroom instruction and hands-on training
are utilized to provide the skills necessary for alignment.
This course will teach
members the basics of using personal computers. They will develop an
understanding of computer hardware, the use of software (Windows, Microsoft
Word, and Microsoft Excel) and how to surf
the internet.
This course introduces the
operation of the Construction Master Pro calculator and utilizes hands-on
learning. Calculators are provided.
First Aid /CPR/AED
This class will not only
provide information and techniques to insure our member's on-the-job safety,
but will also provide critical skills that may save the life of a friend or
family member. Certifications will be issued upon successful completion of the
hands-on test.
Flowserve Pump
This class covers every
aspect of the centrifugal pump including theory, pump operation and curves, trouble
shooting, setting impellers and their design, installing and removing bearings,
types of mechanical seals, setting mechanical seals, precision tool usage
including last word indicators, three point internal micrometers and much more.
Forklift Safety
This class includes
classroom instruction on the current Federal OSHA standards for the safe
operation of a powered industrial lift truck. Hands-on training includes
operating the lift truck to demonstrate safe operating procedures.
GE Gas Turbine Familiarization
The
course includes identification of GE gas turbine components, new gas turbine
installation procedures, and bolting procedures in the turbine industry.
Participants will also receive a Hytorc Bolting
Technician qualification card.

Course

GE Gas Turbine
Familiarization Course
This class focuses on the
set up and operation of the K & E transit. Classroom and hands-on
instruction are utilized to provide the skills necessary for proper operation.
Laser Alignment
Participants learn the
techniques from equipment manuals and then practice the setup and hands-on
applications to demonstrate their understanding and operation of the
dial-indicating equipment.
Machinery Alignment
Procedures
This course will cover
elimination of soft foot, rim-face alignment, reverse dial alignment, thermal
expansion and vertical alignment. Hands-on manipulative training and
interactive lecture are utilized in this class.
Mechanical Seal
This course covers the
parts, their functions and the requirements and techniques for installation of
mechanical seals. Hands-on manipulative training and interactive lecture are
utilized in this class.
Millwright 16-Hour Safety
Course
This class is an intense,
fast paced, thorough course in OSHA construction safety standards, covering 16
subjects. Hands-on manipulative training and interactive lecture are utilized
in this class.
Millwright Qualification
To
meet the requirements of the Millwright Qualification Program, a member must
meet one of the following requirements:
¨
Complete a Millwright
Apprenticeship program recognized by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
¨
Complete written and
manipulative equivalency testing.
¨
If a person holding a
qualified millwright card is released from three [3] jobs because of skill
deficiencies, that member is required to retake all the millwright
qualification tests. After the testing is complete, the member will receive the
necessary re-training requirements for completion.

Optical Level
This
course will introduce the use of jig transits to level and align machinery.
Classroom and hands-on instruction covers the principles that will allow you to
make appropriate manual mathematical and sighting calculations and how to
detect error in mechanical readings.
This course covers in detail rope, sling, and connection capacities.
Learn how to determine the right size sling or chocker for the job, and how to
calculate the effects of sling angle in the capacity of rigging hardware. This
class includes interactive lecture sessions and emphasizes hands-on training
with an overhead crane.
Rough Terrain Forklift
Safety
This
class includes classroom instruction on the current Federal OSHA standards for
the safe operation of a powered industrial lift truck. Hands-on training
includes operating the lift truck to demonstrate safe operating procedures.
Scaffold Qualification
During this course, Welded Frame Scaffolds, Mobile Towers
Scaffolds, Tube & Coupler Scaffolds, Systems Scaffolds, OSHA Scaffold
Regulations, and Fall Protection will be covered. A scaffold
qualification card will be issued upon successful completion.
Scaffold Refresher
To meet the requirements of the Scaffolding Qualification Program,
the member must: Complete Scaffold Refresher Training every four years.
Refresher training must be completed within one year of the expiration date
listed on the qualification card. After the one-year period, the full
qualification must be repeated.
Stepping Up to Foreman
This
course was developed by the UBC to assist journeymen who are considering a move
to a foreman’s position. It consists of self-evaluation and group discussion of
what constitutes a good foreman. It focuses on people skills – not trade
skills.
USPS Bulk Mail
Developed
in conjunction with the United States Postal Service and a number of
contractors and equipment suppliers to upgrade the Bulk Mail Centers to full
automation, the course will prepare our members to work in the USPS Bulk Mail
Centers on the new systems.
Welding Certification
Certification
testing for Plate, Stainless Steel and Boiler Tube are available.
Welding Labs
This
lab is designed to give members the opportunity to practice and become
proficient prior to certification testing.
Welding Principles
This
class introduces the basic knowledge of welding for those seeking to become
proficient in stick welding (SMAW) and/or TIG/MIG.
